St. Paul's triumph 1-nil over SPD United

BASSSETERRE, St. Kitts - DEFENDING champions Island Auto Kactus Conaree FC wrote themselves in the local football history book after they recorded one of the largest margins of victory ever in the Digicel Premier Division by defeating KFC Trinity Challengers 10-nil yesterday (Jan. 25) at Warner Park.

Glenroy Samuel, Errol O’Loughlin and Byon Morson all scored hat tricks as Conaree closed the gap on league leaders Garden Hotspurs.

Challengers, which sit at the bottom of the table, were completely outplayed in all aspects of the game.

The first half ended with Conaree leading 2-0 following Glenroy Samuels’ strike in the 31st minute which was followed by a goal by Errol O’Loughlin on the stroke of half time.

The second half however seemed like a practice match for the defending champions as they created a vast amount of goal scoring opportunities missing the majority of them.

They were however able to score eight of those chances with many individuals in the audience having lost count after the scoreline had passed 7-nil.

Challengers were also given an opportunity to score a consolation goal when a foul inside Conaree’s box resulted in a penalty, which was sent sailing into the bleachers by Hazon Marshall.

Steadroy Charles of Island Auto Kactus Conaree FC suffered an injury to his arm in the 35th minute of play and had to be taken to the hospital.

Officials were Kimbell Ward, Mario Parry, O'Brian Clarke and Steadroy Techeira

In match two yesterday, Julian Benjamin’s 85th minute goal gave S.L. Horsford’s St. Paul’s United a 1-0 victory over SPD United in a competitive encounter.

The game that featured neighbouring communities saw underdogs SPD looking to upset last season finalist. They gave themselves every opportunity to do so by playing rock-solid defence and looking to counter attack St. Paul’s, which were looking to keep apace with team Conaree that won so emphatically in the previous game.

SPD however thwarted most of the threats and created some chances of their own, but poor finishing left them unrewarded.

The game’s only goal came late in the second half as a result of a goalkeeping error when Benjamin’s shot was helped over the line by the SPD goalkeeper, who was left lying on the ground in disbelief that he had made such a critical mistake.

Officials were Caldon Duncan, Delroy Jeffers, Ike Inniss and Tristley Bassue.
