BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - FORMER Leeward Islands and St. Kitts Captain, Steve Liburd was recently suspended from the Leeward Islands training camp which is currently preparing in St. Kitts for the Regional Four-Day and 50 Overs Tournaments.

Liburd, who is considered to be one of the better all-rounders in the Leeward Islands and was seen as a candidate to captain the sub-region’s team in the two upcoming regional tournaments, was suspended following a confrontation with the Minister of Sports, Hon. Glen Phillip, during a practice match held as part of the training camp.

On Thursday (Jan. 23), while Minister Phillip was being introduced to some of the players, it is believed that he was verbally assaulted by Liburd.

Liburd was then escorted into the dressing room by one of his team mates in an effort to keep him out of further trouble.

Minister Phillip then lodged a complaint to the management of the Leeward Islands Camp and demanded an apology.

Liburd was however suspended by the Leeward Islands Cricket team and stands little chance of making the side for the upcoming games.

Steve Liburd has played 35 First Class matches for the Leeward Islands. He has an average of 20.79 with the bat and has picked up 10 wickets.
