BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - RECENT charges laid against former St. Kitts and Leeward Islands captain Steve Liburd are expected to be withdrawn soon.

On Monday (Jan. 27), a police press release stated that “Steve Liburd of Freeman Village was formally arrested and charged for the offence of Assault, Threatening Language and Armed With An Offensive Weapon, which were committed on 23rd January 2014 at Conaree Cricket Grounds”.

SKNVibes understands that Liburd was charged in relation to an incident between him and Minister of Sport Hon. Glen Phillip, which occurred while the cricketer was attending a camp hosted by Leeward Islands Cricket Association in St. Kitts in preparation for the upcoming West Indies Cricket Board tournaments.

On Thursday (Jan. 23), while Minister Phillip was being introduced to some of the players, it is believed that he and Liburd were involved in a verbal disagreement.

Liburd was escorted into the dressing room by one of his teammates in an effort to keep him out of further trouble.

Minister Phillip then lodged a complaint to the management of the Leeward Islands Camp and demanded an apology. Liburd was consequently suspended from the Camp.

On Tuesday (Jan. 28), SKNVibes understood that the charges were expected to be withdrawn and an attempt was made to contact the Minister for confirmation.

Phillip told SKNVibes Sports that he was slated to meet with Liburd and his representatives on that said day and promised to return a call with the outcome of the meeting.

Up to press time no word was had from the Minister.

SKNVibes Sports however contacted Liburd, who confirmed that the meeting did take place and it was expected that the charges would be dropped.

He also stated that no one has contacted him since.

“No one has gotten in touch with me as yet, but I had a meeting with him on Tuesday and no has spoken to me since.

“They said the charges would be dropped, but I can’t say nothing much about it at the moment because I have not been contacted since.”
