SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico-US Coast Guard officials continued an intensive search today (Feb. 9) for six missing Americans whose single engine plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the north shore of Puerto Rico.

While the names of the missing persons have not yet been released, a press release from the Coast Guard identified the missing plane as a Cessena 206 chartered by Tropical Aviation Corporation to fly from the Dominican Republic’s Casa de Campo International Airport to San Juan.

According to the Associated Press, witnesses in the city of Quebradillas saw the plane go down about a half-mile off shore around dusk last evening after an explosion took place aboard the craft.

A pilot and five passengers are believed to have been on board, though the initial helicopter and boat patrols that investigated the wreckage turned up no survivors.

The Coast Guard and other assisting rescuers continued their search this morning at day break in hope that the light of day would make the process easier.
