$15 000 fine for 18 year-old with 5 pounds marijuana

    CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – EIGHTEEN-YEAR-OLD Elvia Collins was yesterday (Feb. 10) fined $15 000 after she appeared in the Charlestown Magistrate’s court to answer charges of possession of a prohibited substance with intent to supply.

     

    The student, who was given 12 months to pay the fine or spend two years in jail, was found in possession of a bag containing 20 quarter-pound bags of cannabis on December 23, 2008 at the Charlestown pier. She told the court that she was doing someone a favour and did not know what the bag contained.

     

    Magistrate Yasmin Clarke told Collins’ mother that her daughter had committed a very serious offence and she would have been sent to prison if she were older.

     

    In the same court, Bevanson Mills of Barnaby was sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to malicious damage to vehicles. Mills received one year on each charge after damaging the windscreens of vehicles P1660 and P4308.

     

    Mills, in his defence, told the court that the owner of one of the vehicles had owed him $5 and did not want to pay him, while the owner of the other vehicle did not pay him for cutting the grass in his yard on three different occasions. He also said it bothered him so badly that he had to smash the windscreens.

     

    And Seshan Thompson of Prospect was fined $600 after pleading guilty to having an offensive weapon and to giving a wrong name to police officers. Thompson, who was found in possession of a knife, must pay the fines within one month.

     

    Also fined for possession of an offensive weapon was Adrian Springette of Bath Village who was ordered to pay $500 within three months or spend six months in prison. Springette, who was found with a knife on his person, was also fined $800 for possession of cannabis. This fine is due within three months or he will spend three months behind bars.

     

    Charges of possession of cannabis were also brought against Deon Daniel, Alex Phillips and Leon Isaac. Daniel of Butlers Village pleaded guilty and was fined $800 – to be paid within a month – or he will spend two months in prison. Phillip, also of Butlers’ Village, was fined $1 500, which must be paid within three months, or he well go to jail for six months.
    Isaac was ordered to pay $800 or spend a month in jail. He was given one month to pay the fine. He was also fined $5 000 or serve a 12-month sentence at Her Majesty’s Prison for possession of cocaine. He was given six months to pay the fine.

     

    In traffic matters, Glenroy Caines was fined $1 000 or one month in prison after pleading guilty to driving without due care and attention. He has six months to come up with the money.

     

    And Conrod Liburd was fined $500, to be paid in three months, or spend one month in prison after he was found driving without valid insurance and license. Liburd apologised to the court and to the Traffic Department for the incident.
