CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (August 16, 2005) -- Minister of Health, Social and Gender Affairs and area representative for the St. James Constituency Hon Jean Harris, has advised residents of the new Nisbett Housing Project that they should guard against persons who would seek to destroy the new roads under construction in that area and to guard against vehicular accidents once the roads are completed.
Hon Harris advice came on Wednesday while she witnessed a new procedure being utilised during road surfacing works at the housing project in the company of Housing and Lands Minister Hon Malcolm Guishard and Head of the Nevis Housing and Lands Corporation Mr. Lloyd Tad Lescott.
At the time, the roads were being surfaced at the housing project with a new technique utilising a pumping system which the Corporation had recently purchased from a Trinidad company.
Minister Harris also thanked the residents for participating in the new housing project, one that the Nevis Island Administration had promised to make available at affordable rates. She gave assurances that the road network at the housing project would be completed in time for the peak of the rainy season.

Meantime, Mr. Lescott told the Government Information Service (GIS) that the special pump being used for the first time would bring the Corporation great benefits. He said the new technique would enhance their ability to complete the housing projects in a more timely fashion, enable them to ease their dependence on the Public Works Department (PWD) who they work closely with and would be cost effective.
He said in the past, the PWD would lay down sub base and base material in preparation for asphalting. Mr. Lescott explained that the equipment was purchased from Deca Petroleum of Trinidad who have a representative on Nevis training the staff.
It is the very first time that we at the Corporation will be applying this material ourselves. The suppliers sent the guy in from Trinidad and two of our guys will be understudying him so when he leaves, we will be taking the job over and it will be done in house.

This is very cost effective and it is not time consuming. It is interesting to note that one of these 55gallon drums almost primes 1000x15 feet of road. In effect we will have much more work done and the output from the Corporation in terms of road construction will be at a much higher level, he said.
Mr. Lescott took the opportunity to thank the residents of the area citing that the Corporation was aware of the difficulties they have faced with excess dust recently. Notwithstanding, echoing the sentiments of Minister Harris, he advised them to be careful on the roads once they have been completed and urged then to be careful on the new road surface to minimise the risk of vehicular accidents.
