Leeward Islands fight back on Day Two

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Leeward Islands cricket team has fought their way back into the West Indies Cricket Board Regional 4-Day encounter vs the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) at Warner Park.

     

    After being dismissed on day one for a paltry 164 runs in their first innings, Leeward Islands needed a strong bowling performance on day two to claw their way back into the match.

    Starting day two on 92-2, the CCC lost overnight batsman Thomas for 43 after he was brilliantly bowled by Gavin Tonge.

    And in short time, they also lost Chadwick Walton to Hayden Walsh.

    The other overnight batsman Raymond Riefer went on to stroke a brilliant half-century before he was caught at short-leg of the bowling of Walsh.

    The Leeward Islands had restricted the CCC to 169-6 by lunch.

    Following the interval Kelbert Walter grabbed his first wicket before Walsh secured his fourth to leave CCC with a score of 185-8.

    The final two wickets of the innings fell to Walters and Anthony Martin, leaving CCC 201-all out with a first innings lead of 38. 

    Hayden Walsh was the pick of the Leeward Islands bowlers with figures of four wickets for 52 runs. He was supported by Kelbert Walters and Gavin Tonge who collected two wickets each.

    In their second innings, Leewards lost wickets in bunches and were struggling with 85 -5 before a 50 run partnership between Jamar Hamilton and Tonito Willet helped to grow the their lead to 97 heading into the third day.

    Hamilton is not out on 44 while Willet is not out on 10.

    The match resumes today (Mar. 3) at 10:00 a.m.
