Blue House fight back to win BHS Sports Day

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - ATHLETES representing Blue House at the Basseterre High School’s Sports Day were jubilant following a scintillating come-back to overturn a commanding lead by the Orange House opponents.

The exciting event took place yesterday (Mar. 2) at the Silver Jubilee Stadium before hundreds of supporters.

After early dominance, it seemed as if Orange House were running away with the title but a strong finish to the evening by Blue House saw that house taking the top spot and being crowned the 2014 Basseterre High School sports champions.

Orange House enjoyed success in the earlier events but their absence in several relays gave Blue House a fighting chance to push their way back into the game and dominate.

The school regarded as ‘the birthplace of champions’ saw a number of championship performances with Shenela Mitchum being the stand-out performer at the school’s showpiece sporting event.

Mitchum seemingly performed like a super athlete to the amazement of many members of the crowd who were in awe of the performance of the young Orange House athlete. She participated in all events that she was eligible to compete in and won them all.

She started the day winning the 800m then went on to win the 200m. Following those triumphs, she won the 400m and 1500m. Then to everyone’s surprise she came back and won the 100m and later that evening, she played an integral role in Orange House’s triumph in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays.

While running the anchor leg of the 4x400m - her last event for the evening - Mitchum was given a standing ovation by members of the audience who were appreciative of her performance throughout the day.

Other standout performers on the day included Trivon Rogers who won the 800m and1500m. He however failed to duplicate those successes in the 400m and 100m.

Olujade Bridgewater dominated the junior girls 200m before suffering an injury which ended her participation at the event.

After just missing out on success at the TDC Inter-school Championships last year, the Basseterre High School will be looking to upstage the defending champions Washington Archibald High School during the 2014.
