By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE. St. Kitts - A man - said to be in his 40s - was shot dead this morning in vicinity of White Gate, St. Pauls after - according to police - he escaped their lawful custody.

Dead is Glenford Douglas who is said to be from Saddlers who resided at Buckleys.

Sometime after 8:00 a.m., SKNVibes received information which suggested that “a body” was found in the area and having made the journey there, this publication observed a male laid out on the mountain side of the road, several feet from the roadside, with a number of police officers in vicinity.

At approximately 10:00 a.m., the Jenkins Funeral Home hearse arrived on scene and collected the body.

Commissioner of Police Celvin ‘CG’ Walwyn was among three senior police officers on scene and while speaking with this publication, he explained that Douglas - whom he said is either 43 or 44 years old - escaped lawful custody having being arrested for burglary.

“Mr. Douglas was in police custody, he was detained on a felony yesterday (Mar. 4) for burglary. This morning he escaped custody at the St. Pauls Station. Officers were out looking for him... He was encountered over in this field. He ran from the police, the officer gave chase. He tried to escape through the barb wire and the officer grabbed him...

The COP further explained that there was an attempt by Douglas to relieve the officer - whose identity has not been revealed - of his firearm.

“In the mean time they were struggling over the firearm. He tried to disarm the officer and he was hit during that time. He was shot by the officer.”

Commissioner Walwyn explained that the officer - a member of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force attached to the St. Pauls Police Station - “sustained injuries... (and) he’s in the hospital right now”.
