Whistle blowing leads to alleged Speaker/Lewis confrontation

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - REPORTS reaching this publication suggest that a man who is a regular participant in Team Unity’s picketing actions, was allegedly approached and accosted by Speaker of the National Assembly - the Hon Curtis Martin - this morning (Mar. 6).

Unlike the other days this week, Team Unity did not stage a protest today - SKNVibes understands - but information indicates that John Lewis of Molyneaux was in vicinity of the St. Kitts Nevis Anguilla National Bank (SKNANB) when he was reportedly approached.

In an interview with this publication, Lewis explained that he was on the seaside of Central Street directly opposite the Bank (the Speaker’s place of employment) with another individual when, after blowing his whistle - the Speaker left the mountain side of the road and approached him at the seaside of the road.

He said it appeared as though the Speaker had just arrived for work when the incident occurred.

“The guy came there and tell me if he is damaged or injured, I gun have to pay de penalty for it. So I was asking him who he be and he didn’t say. And he turned off and went into the Bank... He was very close to me and he put his finger in my face. I didn’t have a placard in my hand. I was there standing up with some people.”

When asked why he blew the whistle Lewis explained that he usually blows the whistle while protesting.

“Yeah I blow a whistle, am accustomed to blow me whistle whenever I am protesting. I got it right here with me.”

Lewis was also asked if by blowing the whistle he was intentioned on bringing or causing any harm to the Speaker to which he replied in the negative. And he reiterated that he uses the whistle as a part of his protest action.

Asked if he lodged a report with the police about the incident, Lewis said he did not but he indicated that he was going to consult with a lawyer.

SKNVibes made attempts to contact Speaker Martin via telephone to get his side of the story but the attempts were unsuccessful.

For several days, protesters have assembled outside of the Bank with placards, calling for Speaker Martin to table the 14-month-old Motion of No Confidence which was filed by the Opposition on December 11, 2012.
