Community Service Advocate Honored In New York City

Press Release

March 7th, 2014  -- Columbia University graduate teacher Mrs. Bernadine Calendar-James was showered with accolades on Friday February 28, 2014 at a cocktail, dinner and dance ceremony held at the Astoria World Manor in Queens, New York.

The annual event, hosted by the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. was held in memory of Rudy Powell, who championed the cause of the historical fraternity, serving as one of its visionaries who helped to transform the lives of others during his earthly sojourn. Honoring Bernie, as she is affectionately called, was in keeping with the organization's goal of identifying individuals who go through great lengths to be of service to others. Bernie was recognized as the perfect fit!

True to form, the feisty, outspoken and brilliant Bernie, in accepting her award, greeted guests including her family and dear friends who attended the event to witness the honor bestowed on her. A few individuals filled up her St. Kitts-Nevis table and she glowingly expressed her appreciation to all who attended and shared her moment with her.

In accepting her award, Bernie spoke passionately about her love for serving others as evidenced by her 39-year involvement with her beloved Delta sorority, among other organizations.

The Montserratian born and Kittitian raised icon has earned the ambassadorial nod from many of her peers, friends and hundreds others who have benefited from her work.  Bernie is an extremely hard worker who is loyal to the cause of uplifting others with a committed focus on the youth, particularly black males. She is a friend to many and has become likened unto an octopus as she is affiliated with numerous organizations, positively impacting many lives in the process.  Bernie's outreach initiatives have earned her the prestigious Omega PSI PHI award, but most importantly, the adulation of countless individuals the world over.

Bernie forces us to ask the question, "Do I long to see others grow in grace and find success because of my efforts to allow them to find prosperity?

The non-denominational 2014 Our Daily Bread prayer book reading for March 6 speaks to such individuals. "This is the measure of greatness, for we are most like God when our thoughts for ourselves are lost in our thoughts for others."

Bernie is the all empowering and consummate world citizen who sees no barrier too difficult to overcome so long as someone stands to benefit.  She is the apple in the eyes of many and her work ethic remains highly respected and unmatched.

Bernie continues to do "big things" in her niche of planet earth!

Congratulations to our Montserratian born, Kittitian raised honoree Mrs. Bernadine Calendar-James.
