March 10th, 2014 -- Leader of the People’s Action Movement and Deputy Leader of Team UNITY, the Hon. Shawn K. Richards has joined Team UNITY Leader and the Leader of the People’s Labour Party the Hon. Dr the Hon Timothy Harris in St Vincent and Grenadines ahead of a meeting of CARICOM Heads of government to sensitize the people of St Vincent and Grenadines and the wider region, of the subversion of democracy by the illegal Douglas Administration.
High Court Judge, Justice Darshan Ramdhani has ruled that in a constitutional democracy, the right to government of the Prime Minister is invalidated without the support of the majority of elected members of Parliament. Six of eleven elected Members of Parliament constituting the Elected Majority have indicated to the Governor General that they do not support Denzil Douglas as Prime Minister. On the alternative, the six elected Members of Parliament are in support of Dr the Hon Timothy Harris as Prime Minister.
St Kitts and Nevis now has an anomalous situation where a majority of Members of Parliament have coalesced and united but in an aberration of democratic rule and the Westminster model of government, the minority runs the government. In order to foist themselves on the people, the government and Speaker of the National Assembly have refused to bring the Motion of No Confidence to the Parliament for debate and vote. The High Court has ruled that the right of Members of Parliament to have the motion debated as a matter of priority and urgently is being infringed by the failure of the Speaker to hear the Motion. The Court dismissed all substantive arguments put by the government and Speaker against debating the Motion of No Confidence, including rejecting the sub-judice argument.
Dr Harris in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, personally thanked Hon Arhnim Eustace for his leadership in the region on this matter and his agitation for the restoration of the democratic order. While there, he joined Hon Arhnim Eustace on Thursday night for a (2) two hour popular call in programme NDP night on NICE Radio. The reception was overwhelmingly supportive of the people of St Kitts and Nevis in the fight for democracy. On Friday, Dr Harris met with the parliamentary Caucus of New Democratic Party (NDP).
The Team Unity Leader updated NDP Parliamentarians on the emerging dictatorship at home and the political and constitutional stalemate. Later on Friday evening, Team Unity leader was the special dinner guest with the Hon. Arhnim Eustace and family.
Saturday’s schedule saw Dr Harris featured on a Washington DC based radio linkup with NICE Radio in St Vincent. This international radio linkup was followed by a call in programme on NICE radio. On Saturday evening, Dr Harris and the Member of Parliament for Kingstown West, the Hon Daniel Cummings met with the Young Democrats (the youth Arm) of the NDP.
Political Pundits, have hailed the visit of Dr Harris and Hon. Richards as timely and impactful, coming ahead of the meeting of CARICOM Heads. This visit drew regional and international media attention including CMC and several other regional radio stations. The unacceptable situation in St Kitts and Nevis where a minority of elected representatives runs the government while the majority remains in opposition, has been exposed for the absurdity it represents in a democratic society. Dr Harris and Hon. Richards , have thanked the Hon. Arhnim Eustace for the courage of his leadership and for almost single-handedly among the wider Caribbean agitated for the restoration of democracy in St. Kitts and Nevis.
Deputy Chairman of the People’s Labour Party (PLP) in St.Kitts Mr Craig Tucket has also joined the delegation in St.Vincent. On Monday, further attention will be paid to the travesty in St Kitts and Nevis when Team Unity’s Leader Dr. Harris and NDP Leader Hon Arhnim Eustace along with St.Kitts-Nevis MP and Leader of the People’s Action Movement Hon. Shawn Richards and other Members of the St.Vincent and Grenadines Parliament and well wishers of St. Kitts and Nevis, will hold a press conference at the Greenhouse in Buccament’s Bay, a short distance from the resort in which CARICOM heads are meeting. It is expected that this Press Conference will be preceded by other activities. Local and regional media are expected to be linked up to this historic conference.
St.Kitts-Nevis’ WINN FM, VON Radio, Radio St.Kitts-Nevis and Sugar City Rock FM as well as other regional broadcasters including Radio Anguilla, Radio St. Martin and Antigua’s Observer Radio are all expected to carry the Historic Press Conference live on Monday morning at 11am.
