Leewards and Jamaica heading for draw

By: Loshaun Dixon, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - The 4-Day/Night encounter between the Leeward Islands and Jamaica at Warner Park seems set for a draw heading into the final.

In their first innings on Friday (Mar. 7) and Saturday (Mar. 8), the Leeward Islands posted 322 all-out with captain Keiran Powell making top score of 91, supported with contributions by Hayden Walsh Jr (86) and Tonito Willet (78).

Jamaican Captain Tamar Lambert picked up 4 wickets for 68 runs while Jerome Taylor collected three for 31.

In reply Jamaica was dismissed for 351 thanks to 110 by John Campbell who frustrated the Leewards during his brilliant display of aggressive batting.

Jamaica started Day 3 (Mar. 9) on 203-3 with Campbell going strong after reaching his century the night before.

However Jamaica lost a flurry of wickets early on Day 3 to be restricted to 262-7. But a 50-run partnership between Dave Bernard and Jamie Merchant pushed the Jamaican total beyond 300 and eventually past the Leeward Islands total to take frist innings points.

In their second innings the Leeward Islands started poorly and were struggling at 40-3 after losing Marley Richards, Monticin Hodge and Sylvester Joseph. However a patient knock of 33 from 111 by Powell and an aggressive half century by Devon Thomas rebuilt the Leeward Islands innings to leave them at 117-3 at the end of Day 3.

Leeward Islands have a lead of 89 going into the final day of the match which will begin at 3:00p.m. today (Mar. 10)

The new lighting and video systems at Warner Park made their debut in this game.
