NIA CHARLESTOWN Nevis (March 10, 2014) -- The Nevis Island Administration (NIA) continues to develop its human resource and has urged persons who had not yet studied at university level, to look into the priority areas of study in which the government was willing to invest in spite of its limited resources.
Premier of Nevis and Minister of Education Hon. Vance Amory issued the invitation on March 07, 2014 at his Bath Plain office.
“In terms of our own development of our human resources, we are looking to attract individuals: teachers or persons who have not yet gone off to university, to look at the priority areas in which the government itself will invest.
“Those priority areas are clearly in teaching of English language, English Literature and Mathematics, Geography, the Sciences and Health or health-related subjects,” he said.
According to Mr. Amory, the areas of study identified were weak and needed strengthening as the education system was being overhauled.
“We would like our people to choose those areas because those areas are in great demand because we are now looking at ways of revamping our education system. We have identified weaknesses in English Language, in Mathematics, in Science and in technical areas in which we want to strengthen the competence of our teachers and our children.
“It is in that light, that we have looked at those areas as priority areas and I am encouraging you if you do not succeed in getting one of the scholarships which are paid for by the Republic of China (Taiwan), that you look to your government and we will assist you in those areas of priority,” he said.
However, persons, who were interested in pursuing university level studies in areas that were not listed as priority, were urged to continue doing so and pointed to other on shore opportunities that were available.
“This is not to say that if individuals have other interests that are not on the priority list that you ought not to pursue your education at university. There is also the opportunity for any student who wants to continue to live here at home or work to engage in university studies through the [University of the West Indies] Open University Campus here in Nevis at Marion Heights,” he said.
The Education Minister encouraged workers in the NIA, students and other members of the public, to make use of all the opportunities and avail themselves of them in an effort to improve their academic qualifications, improve their technical skills and marketability that would afford them to command a good job either with government or in the private sector.
“I make this appeal because I know that a number of our students, our children would want to go off to study but I am just setting out for you the options which are available and trust that you would take those options.
