Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 13, 2014 (SKNIS): The bond of friendship between the Republic of Mexico and the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis was highlighted on Wednesday (March 12) during the opening of the Tabernacle Police Station, funded in part by Mexican authorities.

Minister of Foreign Affairs the Honourable Patrice Nisbett told the audience that over the past 20 years, the Government of Mexico has given “unwavering support” and has worked to enhance diplomatic relations.

“The opening of this police station signals just how far the St. Kitts and Nevis and Mexico partnership has come,” Minister Nisbett stressed. “Likewise, it represents the immense and wide ranging potential that cooperation holds for the future. The completion of this project ushers in the beginning of a new chapter in our bilateral relations. We hope to harness closer ties in view of providing better opportunities for the people of our two countries.”

The foreign affairs minister emphasized the growing sphere of global influence fueled by Mexico’s economic prospects and expressed a desire to pursue mutual areas of interest.

Prime Minister the Right Honourable Dr. Denzil Douglas said the new building is part of his Government’s pledge to enhance the operations of emergency first responders.

“This Tabernacle Station, out of which our police and fire and rescue services will operate, is evidence of the seriousness of that commitment,” he stated. “In light of this then … I am very pleased to be able to present to the people of Tabernacle and the surrounding region, this facility from which emergency personnel of various types will serve you.

I am equally pleased to present to the emergency personnel who will be based here, this new facility which reflects the government’s determination to put in place the physical structures, the professional training and all of the other key components that will heighten motivation, heighten professionalism and heighten a sense of initiative and productivity within your own ranks.”

The residents of the area were thanked for the input they gave to ensure the needs of the community were met by the new facility.

“I declare yet again, our people deserve safety and security whether they are at home, whether their children are at school, whether [adults] are at work, whether they are at a place of worship,” Prime Minister Douglas said emphatically. “They deserve safety and security and this government will deliver to the people of this country what they deserve.”

The St. Kitts and Nevis leader echoed sentiments of gratitude to the Government of Mexico and gave assurances to further deepen areas of cooperation.
