Excitement and records at CEMSS Sports Day

By: Loshaun Dixon, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - ATHLETES of the Charles E. Mills Secondary School’s (CEMSS) Blue House were in celebration mode on Friday (Mar. 14) evening after that house - for the sixth time in a row - was crowned sports champion.

Going into the event, Orange House held a 64-point advantage over their closest rival-  Blue House - but during an exciting afternoon that featured almost eight hours of track and field action, their lead was overturned by Blue House which captured 313 points on Sports Day to orange’s 229.

In front of a packed Sandy Point Recreation Ground filled with parents and supporters of the most successful school in track and field history, an intense competition ensued between both houses and the event resulted in nine records being broken.

Leading the Blue House charge was Dimitri Browne who outclassed his opponents in the Class Three boys category winning the 400 metres and 80 meter hurdles while accounting for records in the 200 metres and 100 metres.

Kevin Woodley - also of Blue House - showed his dominance in the Class One boys category in the middle and long distances winning the 800, 1500 and 3000 metres respectively.

Red House’s Rhianda Richardson won the Class Two girls category by setting a new 800 metre record and by winning the 200 metres, 400 metres, 400 metre hurdles and the 100 metres.

Alia Vanterpool in the 800 metres, Nathaniel Huggins in the 200 metres and Tehara Carty in the 1500 metres were among some of the other record breakers from the day.

With the battle between Blue and Orange waging while heading into the relays, it was never anticipated that those races would provide such drama for the hundreds who had gathered.

The race of the day however was the Class Two girls 4x400 metre relay which was dominated by Red House for the first three legs before Blue House took the lead within the first 100 metres of the final leg and seemed to be running away with the race.

The athletes from Red House however found a burst of energy and clawed their way back into the race overtaking the Blue House athletes and capturing gold for their house.

At the end of the action however it was revealed that Blue had won the the Sports Day Tally by some 74 points and had beaten Orange on the overall standings by a mere 10 points.

Following the excitement at the CEMSS Sports Day many are tipping the school as one of the favorites to capture the TDC Inter-school Championships to be held in two weeks time.
