Basseterre, St. Kitts. March 19, 2014 (SKNIS) -- The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis is holding true to its promise to provide affordable housing to its citizens and residents through its Independence 30 Habitat 500 Housing Initiative.
The project which will kick off with a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday March 19 will bring together government officials from the Ministry of Housing, housing contractors and potential home owners from the area to witness the start of the first phase of this project.
Parliamentary representative for the area Honourable Glen “Ghost” Phillip told St. Kitts and Nevis Information Service that because most of the villages in his constituency are located along coastal areas the housing situation in this area is particularly unique.
“My constituency starts in Challengers and it goes all the way down to New Guinea,” said Minister Phillip. “In terms of the housing situation, since I became minister to represent the people in that area, we have built over eighty houses in that constituency. That constituency presents a unique situation in terms of housing, the fact that the houses are on the coastal areas and the fact that St. Kitts is in a hurricane belt there is a need to relocate a lot of persons who are living close to the sea who reside in that constituency.”
He said he was particularly excited that the decision was made to start Habitat 500 in his constituency.
“The good thing about Habitat 500 and the fact that it starts in Stone Fort Estate, I think is significant to the people who are living there,” the minister said. “It has been an estate since the days of sugar, there has been no serious renovations that have been done in the estate, there has not been any housing that has been allocated for persons since the estate had become a residential area and it shows the government’s thrust in terms of compassion for persons and also improving the quality of life for each and every Kittitian here in St. Kitts.”
With this effort, the government moves closer and closer to alleviating the shortage of housing situation in the federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.
