Government rewrites housing history at historical site

By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 06, 2014 (SKNIS): A new chapter is being written in the history of Stone Fort with the decision to make it the site for Government’s Independence 30 Habitat 500 Housing Initiative.

Organizers, invited guests, residents and onlookers gathered on Wednesday (March 19) were unanimous in agreement that this was a positive breaking of ground for building contractors, suppliers and potential home owners from the area.

National Housing Corporation General Manager and Groundbreaking Chairperson Judith Rawlins appealed to all gathered to embrace the government’s vision to turn Stone Fort Estate into a modern housing development.

“I’m sure a lot of you have been skeptical as to why Stone Fort Estate yard? But I have had some time to begin to imagine what this place is going to be,” Rawlins said. “We have come here as NHC, the chairman of the board, other members of staff, the accountant, everybody; we have all passed through here, the members of the technical team to begin to open our imagination as to what Stone Fort yard could be. So, I want you to begin today, in your own minds, and in case you’re short on imagination, we've provided a pictorial for you, of the potential of Stone Fort Estate.”

The Honourable Glen “Ghost” Phillip was proud to register his support for the initiative as the parliamentary representative for this historic area and reiterated the current Labour party administration’s commitment to improving the quality of life of every citizen and resident of St. Kitts and Nevis through affordable housing.

“Young men and women will be able to independently establish their families with the pride in knowing that each monthly payment is an investment into an asset that will be passed on to their son or daughter and their children” said Minister Phillip. “I stand here today delighted in the knowledge that Habitat 30 continues on the vision of social and economic advancement and empowerment of more of our people. And with the unshakable faith I say Habitat 30 will lead the way to more and more homes being built until all the people in this constituency and this country share in the accomplishment of home ownership.”

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister with responsibility for housing added to the good news of the day when he announced cabinet’s decision to increase Habitat 30 to 1000 homes. In addition, he said focus will be placed on rejuvenating some of the inner city areas in and around St. Kitts.

“The good news will not be restricted to the construction of homes; the good news will see the rejuvenation of certain inner cities, more specifically in the McKnight area, the Newtown area, the Fort Thomas Road area” said Minister Martin. “We have seen dilapidated houses in these areas, people moving in and people moving out. We need to change the face of these inner cities and this programme will ensure that we are able to change the face of these inner cities. That is what Labour is all about.”

The ground has already been cleared for the next phase of the housing project, whose commencement will be announced at a later date.
