BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - ATHLETES of Sandy Point yesterday (Mar. 23) dethroned their neighbours, St. Paul’s, to become the 2014 RAM’S Primary School Champions.

In a nail biting encounter which was decided in the very last race of the competition the Sandy Point Primary School emerged victorious just edging out the Beach Allen Primary School after both schools finished with 10 goals medals each and had to be separated by the Silver medal count.

The Beach Allen Primary School led the competition following the first day but was closely followed by St. Paul’s Primary, Dr. William Connor and the Sandy Point Primary.

The battle however then narrowed to a three horse race among Beach Allen, Dr. William Connor and Sandy Point with neither never really taking a huge on the others.

At the end of the 100 metres Beach Allen opened a lead by two gold medals heading into the 4x100 metre relays.

During the 4x100s each of those schools earned one victory with Sandy Point however involved in a close race that had to be decided by the photo finish.

It was however deemed that Sandy Point had indeed won that race trailing the Beach Allen Primary School by just one gold medal.

At that stage Beach Allen had 10 gold medal with  Sandy Point and Dr William Connor having nine and eight respectively with just the two 4x400 metre relays remaining.

Tension then filled the Silver Jubilee Stadium as the 4x400s began. With over a dozen schools registered in both the boys and girls open races, the 4x400 metre relays had to be ran as timed finals.

In the girls section the first event featured all three contending schools. The first two legs of the race was dominated by Dr. William Connor but the tide turned during the last two legs which left Sandy Point in command of the race with no hope of a come back from either Beach Allen or Dr William Connor.

The second timed final was won by Tucker Clarke Primary School.

Sandy Point was then declared the winner of the timed finals to become tied on gold medals with Beach Allen

In the boys side the first of the timed finals featured none of the contending schools but was also won by Tucker Clarke.

The final race of the evening had representation from those battling for supremacy. In that race, Beach Allen set the pace and was seemingly running away with the race. They led for the first three legs and for 397 metres on the final leg before their anchor runner fell just shy of the finish line and was surpassed by the anchor for St. Paul’s demoting them to second.

That was deemed the quicker of the two races and St. Paul’s was declared the winner of the timed final and Beach Allen was second.

At the end of all the competitions Sandy Point and Beach Allen was left tied on 10 gold medals and had to be separated by silvers which Sandy Point had the advantage of six to five.

The teachers and Students of the school were in celebratory mood after it was announced that they were the 2014 champions and presented with the championship trophy.
