Commissioning of breasting dolphin at SCASPA

Press Release

March 24th, 2014  --  St. Kitts welcomed the largest German cruise line, MV Aida Luna with a special inaugural presentation at the Deep Water Port in Bird Rock, St. Kitts on March 19, 2014. The Aida Luna’s inaugural visit to St. Kitts coincided with SCASPA’s unveiling of its new breasting dolphin; this dolphin specifically built to accommodate the berthing of such Freedom class vessels as the Aida Luna and even larger vessels.

The Deep Water Port was transformed into a Caribbean Village where Caribbean music permeated the air and masquerades and Customer Service Ambassadors dressed in the National wear, serviced and entertained the visitors. The operations at the cargo facility were closed for the day to accommodate the visit of the vessel.

Minister of Tourism and International Transport, Honourable Richard Skerritt and other stakeholders were on hand to witness the successful accommodation of the Aida Luna as this event brought to fruition one of SCASPA’s major investment projects to date.

“We are celebrating the completion of a major project that has been taking place here at the cargo pier. The cargo pier has always been a cruise ship pier with significant limitations. We were previously unable to accommodate certain size ships because of the size of the pier. As we saw the demand growing in St. Kitts as a destination….we began the process to construct a breasting dolphin. This facilitation of the Aida Luna is the first ship of this size to come along side the cargo pier and it would not have been able to take place without the additional larger breasting dolphin that completed construction a few weeks ago.”

The construction of an additional breasting dolphin is part of SCASPA’s strategic plan to cater to the demands of additional ships and passengers on island. With the construction of the additional dolphin at the cargo port, the Deep Water Port will provide berthing for vessels as large as Freedom Class.
