Charlestown Nevis (August 23, 2005) Youths in Nevis are being given an alternative and more competitive challenge by the Nevis Island Administration. To this end, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has announced that the first ever 10 kilometer race would be held on National Heroes Day, September 16, 2005.
The announcement came during a press conference held at the Four Seasons Resort earlier today (Tuesday), when the Junior Minister of Youth and Sports, the Hon Mr. Laughton Brandy said, The Ministry of Youth and Sports seeks constantly to develop programmes which provides opportunities for the development of our youth.
He noted that the ministry had focus mainly on development through music and sport, but added, We are also heavily involved in training, job training, recruitment and job placement. This particular time, the focus is on a sports programme.
The race which will start from the junction of the Cottle Church in New Castle and finish in front of the Nevis Tourism Authority building is a collaborative effort of the Ministry of Youth and Sport and the Nevis Amateur Athletic Association.
In pointing out the vision for the programme, Minister Brandy said that its the Ministrys intention to have a Nevis Marathon. The 10 kilometer run is just the first step; the next stage we will move to the Nevis half marathon which will ultimately give way to the dream Nevis Marathon.
The programme has four objectives which hopes to achieve. These are to provide an opportunity for the development of athletes especially at a long distance level; to make a contribution to the further enhancement of Caribbean integration; to create an opportunity for the further development of sports tourism on Nevis and to create the opportunity for economic gains on Nevis.
The Minister was accompanied by President of the Nevis Athletic Association, Mr. Lester Blackett who gave an outline of the days event. The run will mainly be funded by the Ministry and according to Mr. Blackett, prizes would be distributed for different categories.
