Pole endangers lives of two Cable workers

By: Melissa Bryant, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – TWO employees of The Cable got an unpleasant shock yesterday afternoon (Feb. 19) when a pole they were working on fell to the ground on Pond Road in the vicinity of the Basseterre Fire Station.

The incident occurred at about 12:15 p.m. and involved Bervin Daniel and Desi Brown, who are both employed by The Cable.

According to The Cable’s Engineering Manager, Val Browne, Daniel and Brown had both set up ladders; one at the site where the pole fell and the other about 60 feet to the left. Both men’s ladders were hooked into a strand of fibre optic cable that they were reattaching between the two points.

They were still in the reattachment process when the pole fell down. Both men jumped off their ladders and fell to the ground, sustaining undisclosed injuries. They were transported to the Joseph N. France Hospital, where they were treated for their injuries and subsequently discharged.

Upon SKNVibes’ arrival on-scene, additional workers from The Cable were present and were in the process of replanting the pole.

Browne assured that the lines connected to the pole would be back up shortly, and upon further investigation later that day, the pole was observed to have been replanted.
