BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - IN its effort to sensitise athletics enthusiasts on the schools and their athletes who they should look for in the upcoming TDC Inter-School Championships, SKNVibes has continued in its on going series and will be highlighting the athletes of the Verchilds High School(VHS).

In an exclusive interview with SKNVibes Sports, VHS coach Lonzo Wilkinson highlighted some of the top athletes to expect at the meet.

“We have athletes like Shanice Elliot, Shafiqua Maloney, Curvis Collins, Travis Douglas and couple other runners who run well.”

While at the VHS sports day SKNVibes Sports observed Shafiqua Maloney who won and set records in the 400 metres, 800 metres and the 300 metre hurdles.

Maloney was however bettered in the 200 metres and 100 metres by star athlete Shanice Elliot who won those events and also set new records.

Curvis Collins dominated the Class Three Boys sprints while also accounting for three records in those events.

In the Class Two category, a battle had ensued between Darrell Warner and Travis Douglas. Douglas got the first victory in the 200 meters with a new record, but Warner got his revenge in the 400 metres. He also set a new record in that event.

However it was Douglas who had the final laugh when he won and broke the record in the 100 metres.

It was also observed that 14 records were broken on that day.

Wilkinson also commented on how preparations are going for that event

“As you know we just came of our sports day a week ago and so we had a couple days rest before we actually got back on the track. We started last week with some preparation baton passing, fine tuning the hurdlers, the throwers.

“I know other schools started long before because the sports day was before us but we had to take a break and today we were working on the relay team. We feel again that interschool will be close and it will come down to the relays and we have to make sure that we are ready in the relay areas.”

He also stated what are some of his strengths and weakness.

“We are always good in the field areas shotput, javelin and discuss but this time around we are much more rounded on the track.

“We are very weak in the Under 20 that is the senior category I think all in all we are much more balanced than before.”

Wilkinson also spoke of his confidence ahead of the meet starting on Friday.

“I would say I am as confident as any other school. Once your competing you are supposed to be confident enough to go to the top and feel like you can win otherwise do not compete.

“ Even if we come last I want us to compete at our best so I am confident that I can win. We have been striving for years to be on top we have been in second place and I think we can be on the top.”

The much-anticipated TDC Inter-School 2014 Championships is scheduled to be held at the Silver Jubilee Stadium from March 28 to 30
