BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, April 2nd 2014 (CUOPM) – The dysfunctional opposition People’s Action Movement (PAM), which traditionally holds its annual convention in the month of February, is yet to hold its 2014 event.
And Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas responding to a caller on Tuesday, who was severely critical of her Parliamentary Representative, Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris, is in agreement that his former Cabinet colleague and self-appointed political leader of the People’s Labour Party may have succeeded in damaging the PAM party, which traditionally holds its annual convention in February or March.
Dr. Douglas noted that the month of March has ended and the PAM party has not held its annual convention, although previous conventions were held in April, 2013; March 18, 2012; April 3, 2011; July 4, 2010; May 3, 2019 and a Special Convention in October 2009.
“PAM has not even gone through its traditional convention that it should have had in March. PAM has gone in. Timothy Harris has succeeded in destroying PAM in order to elevate himself in his bid to become the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis,” said Prime Minister Douglas.
“Timothy Harris has succeeded in destroying PAM in his quest to become the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis and it would appear as if PAM has not realized that. And so I want to say to this caller that she is very wise in her observations,” Dr. Douglas said.
Prime Minister Douglas, Political Leader of the governing St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party recalled several events by Harris, which included making unsavoury public remarks about him.
“Remember what Timothy Harris was doing. For several months to over a year I have been told, he has been speaking ill of the Prime Minister. Basically saying to the people of Constituency #7 that everything that they have asked for that he can’t deliver, but he can deliver to his family members, it is the Prime Minister, Blame the Prime Minister for everything. So the Prime Minister in their sight was the problem,” said Dr. Douglas, who echoed the words of the caller that ‘Dr. Douglas is not the problem. The problem is Dr. Timothy Harris and the solution to Timothy Harris in Constituency #7 is Dr. Vance Gilbert and I want the people of Constituency #7 to understand this.’
“I have not done Timothy Harris one thing because examine what he is telling you. What he is saying that I caused to be the problem. Is it a problem with his family members who got whatever they wanted? Was it a problem in giving whom he selected to get what he wanted them to get? Was Douglas the problem there in stopping him? Everybody knows the behaviour and the nature of Timothy Harris; everybody knows his nature so how could Douglas stop him?” asked the Prime Minister.
Dr. Douglas is of the view that Timothy Harris’ problem was that he knew that around this time most likely, the Labour Party would have been engaged actively in the selection of the new leader.
“I am 25 years in Parliament. I have served. I have said to my cabinet colleagues on January the 7th 2012, in the very first cabinet meeting that I have served well I believe and the time has come for us to look at how we can renew and how we can reinvigorate the party and its agenda and we will do it during the 80th Anniversary of the party which was 2012,” recalled Dr. Douglas.
As he stated on many occasions, Dr. Douglas noted that he started the process of preparing the party for the next elections but there is no certainty that I will lead the party into the elections by 2015.
“I gave that signal in January of 2012 and from there onwards, Harris’ mind began to work. Harris wanted me to anoint him and appoint him as my successor and out of respect for Sam Condor, I told him I could not because I have a Deputy. Out of loyalty to Sam Condor, I said I could not. He (Harris) began to press me since January 2010 when he wanted me to signal that he would be my successor by having him appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister, I told him no, I could not do that. I asked him, have you discussed this matter with Sam Condor? And when I spoke with Sam, he said ‘no,’ Harris has not discussed this thing with me at all.”
He again stated that in an effort to prepare the Labour Party for succession of a new leader, Professor Simon Jones-Hendrickson and Professor Neville Duncan, both professors in the University of the West Indies and the University of the Virgin Islands respectively, “to help us to go through the process of transitioning from one leader to the next.”
Dr. Douglas said that Dr. Harris having not secured his unilateral support, his nod and endorsement, that he would be my successor, he then began to plot and undermine the Labour Party.
“Undermine me, knowing that he had started discussions with members of the PAM hierarchy, having promised that if he would win the elections, he would make Michael Morton of TDC, the Governor General. People need to understand these things because having promised him that, he began his undermining and started the process of dismantling, it would appear the leadership and the relationship between the people of Labour and the Leader Denzil Douglas,” said Dr. Douglas.
“So I want to make it clear that the caller is right; that is why the people in Constituency #7 are now calling Timothy Harris, ‘Jim Jones,’ ‘Judas,’ ‘Hypocrite,’ ‘Traitor,’ ‘Ungrateful.’ These are the terms that this young lady used a moment ago and I made a note of every single one of them. That’s how the people of Constituency #7 are describing Timothy Harris for what he has done, trying to take the leadership of the party and thus become Prime Minister.
Dr. Douglas also agreed with the caller that PAM will never ever make Dr. Harris, the Prime Minister if they were to win.
“They have now recognized that this ‘Unity thing’ is a farce. That is why it would appear recently they have taken a decision for PAM to reclaim leadership of the ‘Unity’ and that is why we are understanding that Dr. Simmonds is now having a dinner, it would appear on the 78th Anniversary of his birth because PAM wants to get some standing again in the community.
