BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, April 3rd 2014 (CUOPM) – Prime Minister the Right Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas says he will tender his resignation as Head of Government if the parliamentary representatives for St. Christopher 3 and St. Christopher 7 resign their seats and are re-elected following by-elections.
“The Hon. Timothy Harris and the Hon. Sam Condor need to understand what they must do. Go back to the people and if they win their seats in bi-elections and they are then on the PAM ticket, then I believe there might be some consideration for action because I may then resign,” said Dr. Douglas during his weekly radio programme “Ask the Prime Minister” on Tuesday.
Prime Minister Douglas, who is awaiting the hearing and decision of the Court on a Motion of No Confidence said he will tender his resignation if the Labour Party loses in the two bye elections.
“The people would have spoken and so I will definitely give up the mandate that I have, but no Governor General under the present circumstances can say that I have received a letter and that letter is saying that six of them are now on one side and this person among the six is the one who we want for Leader.
It doesn’t work like that. The people in elections must determine that and so I want to say to all of our supporters and to the people of this country, you don’t have to worry because all that has been going on is really a ‘pappy-show,’ a puppet-show we would say in the proper English language,” said Dr. Douglas during his weekly radio programme “Ask the Prime Minister.”
Reiterating how a Prime Minister is appointed, Prime Minister Douglas pointed to the occasions when the Governor General can make such an appointment under the 1983 Independence Constitution.
“So the caller is right. You are wise because 60% of the electorate voted for the Labour Party in the last election and the Labour Party does not intend in any way to give up that majority which expressed its view to have the Labour Party continuing to serve its interest as the leadership of this particular country,” said Dr. Douglas.
“So thank you caller for making those observations and again the cry must be that a fresh mandate given to them by the people. They want to be ‘fish and fowl’ at the same time. The Labour Party has already rejected them. We don’t want them. One was dismissed, the other one resigned in support of the one being dismissed. Both of them sent out of the party in disgrace and so they must now seek fresh mandate. You can’t use the Labour Party support that you got in 2010 and now want to do what you like in the Parliament, it can’t happen,” said Dr. Douglas.
