Charlestown Primary School celebrates Black History Month

By: Sharlene Martin, SKNVibes

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – THE Charlestown Primary School held its annual Black History Month Concert yesterday (Feb. 23) at the school grounds under the theme “Celebrating Our Heritage”.

Once again pupils and teachers, dressed in traditional African wear, recited poems, sang songs and played the steel pan – much to the enjoyment of the parents and guardians gathered in the morning sunshine.

Stealing the show was Justin Herbert of Grade Six whose voice captivated the audience that they called for a repeat performance.

The concert got underway immediately after devotions when Father Antonio spoke to the pupils about knowing their destiny.

Principal Alice Swanston told SKNVibes that this year’s observances are a bit different from those of the past. She said that apart from the concert there would be a presentation of films entitled Our Struggles, Our Freedom, Our Achievements.

The films will be shown at the Library from Tuesday to Thursday and the students will take turns attending.

The Principal explained that activities in the past included book displays, displays of grass mats and other craft as well as cooking.

She said that since the concert was established some three years ago, persons attending, including parents and the school’s vendors, would dress in traditional African garb. She explained that students of other races are also free to don their heritage wear.
