Maurice Hillier plans Black History Month celebration

By: Melissa Bryant, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE staff and students of the Maurice Hillier Memorial Junior School are inviting the public to attend their annual Black History Month celebration on Friday (Feb. 27) at the Basseterre High School Auditorium at 7:30 p.m.

For the mere prices of EC$15 (adults) and EC$5 (children), persons can view a display of creativity and ingenuity by the school’s pupils. Held under the theme “Together We Can”, the concert will feature a variety of song, dance and poetry performances commemorating Black History.

SKNVibes contacted Principal Icilma Springer, who stated that this was the fifth production of the annual programme. She expounded upon the significance of the theme, noting it was the school’s way of emphasising the importance of teamwork to achieve a common goal.

“As it relates to parents and parenting, we want to stress to parents how important it is for them to communicate and have a bond with their children. The show is not just about celebrating and raising awareness of Black History. It is also about showing parents, and society on a whole, that persons throughout history have worked together to make things work, and it should be no different in our case,” Springer said.

According to the Principal, another component of the show would be a short play addressing the achievement of Barack Obama as the 44th and first African-American US President. She revealed that a student would portray the famous black icon and would re-enact portions of his most famous speeches, such as his inaugural address.

Additionally, Springer disclosed that the school would be honouring the late Director of the Curriculum Development Unit, Gwyneth Hanley.

“She was a person who worked hard and she was a positive role model for persons to emulate. It is our hope that our students will become aware of her legacy and will try to embody some of the good qualities she had,” noted the Principal.
