BVI Press Release

B.V.I. Wednesday, February 25 – The Archives and Records Management Unit of the Deputy Governor’s Office will host an exhibition of Virgin Islands photography in mid-April.

Chief Records Management Officer Mrs. Verna Penn Moll told the Department of Information and Public Relations that photography is one of the most authentic methods of recording a country’s topographical features and natural beauty over given periods, its socio-economic history and its general developmental growth.

She added that the exhibition is being mounted in appreciation of “this invaluable service which photographers contribute in our society and to encourage young and old photographers to display and share their works with the community and with the Archives and Records Management Unit.”

The exhibition is one way of partnering with the public in building the unit’s picture collection for reference and research use of present and future generations. The Archives Unit and Friends of the Archives sponsored a similar exhibition in April 2007, namely, the BVI Old Pictures Competition and Exhibition, which was designed to emphasise the value of old pictures as artefacts of history worthy of preservation, and to involve the public with building the Territory’s archives.

Photographers interested in registering for the exhibition and obtaining further information can telephone the Archives and Records Management Unit at 468-3701 ext. 2365, 2362 or 3044.

The Archives and Records Management Programme was established in April, 2004 in the Deputy Governor’s Office. Its objective is to encourage proper record creation, good record keeping and management in Government and to develop a comprehensive archives and records management programme.
