BVI Press Release

B.V.I. Wednesday, February 25 – Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Hon. Omar W. Hodge is confirming that there is no new policy on the administration of work permits in the Territory.

The Minister also gives assurances to the business community and the public that his ministry and its Labour Department are working steadfastly to address the Territory’s labour needs.

The Labour Minister’s comments come in response to concerns expressed by a number of business persons who have contacted him about statements made by the Minister for Education and Culture with respect to the current labour policy and the issuance of work permits.

While Minister Hodge acknowledged that the current economic woes assaulting the global economy have certainly impacted the Territory’s labour market, he was quick to point out that he has issued no new policy on the administration of work permits and neither has the Honourable Premier given him a directive in that regard.

The Labour Minister told the Department of Information and Public Relations that he is aware of the growing concerns in the community particularly as it relates to lay-offs, job placement and work permits. He further stated that he is working to secure measures that will be in the best interest to all stakeholders.

“Good labour management practices are needed for a striving Territory and areas relating to the work permit process will be addressed to ensure fair and equitable working conditions for all,” the Labour Minister said.

“A balance must exist between jobs offered and the present workforce so that the Labour Department and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour can serve its designated purpose,” Hon. Hodge further stated.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour through its Labour Department is the Government arm responsible for the processing of work permits, renewals and exemptions; labour dispute resolution; employee health and working conditions; and job performance and leave rights.
