Press & Public Relations Department, Nevis Island

Hon Laughton Brandy Junior Minister of Youth and Sports in the Nevis Island Administration.

    CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (August 24, 2005) --
The Nevis Island Cabinet met with members of the Nevis Cricket Association hours before the Nevis Cricket team left Nevis for Antigua on Wednesday afternoon, in an attempt to resolve some critical problems within the Association, which had threatened the participation of the Nevis team in an encounter against Antigua in Antigua scheduled for Thursday.
In a statement following the meeting, Junior Minister of Youth and Sports Hon Laughton Brandy said, These problems have impacted on all of us as Nevisians as we are indeed very close to our game cricket.  All of us have an interest in seeing cricket played in Nevis and for Nevis to be represented in the Leeward Islands cricket and regionally.

I am happy to report that the meeting resolved a team selected by and large by the selection committee and sanctioned by everyone present at the meeting to represent Nevis in the match against Antigua this Thursday, he said.

Members of the team are Runako Morton Captain; Denerson Browne, Kejel Tyson, Marvin Hamilton, Jamoy Pemberton, Kieron Powell, Allan Powell, Javier Liburd, Trevier Smithen, Aquito Willett, Shaed Tyson, Carlon Smithen, Dillon Webbe and Ian Byron.  The management team is represented by Marvin Richardson Manager; Raphael Wallace Coach and Masfield Nisbett Trainer.

We all wish this team well and assure them that they have the support of the executive, cricket lovers and indeed all Nevisians, he said adding that they would be eligible for selection at a one day match also in Antigua over the weekend.

Minister Brandy said that it was important for the public to note that after there seemed to have been a deadlock in the Nevis Cricket Association resolving the problems they faced, the Ministry of Youth and Sports took the initiative to invite the Association to the meeting to resolve the matter.

According to Hon. Brandy, a number of other issues were discussed including matters pertaining to the executive, selection, and discipline. He said it had become obvious to the Cabinet that they would not be able to resolve all the problems at Wednesdays meeting but that the matter of the team going to Antigua was of outmost priority and as a result focus was paid to that issue.
