EVENT: PRESS CONFERENCE - LAUNCH OF CLIMATE CHANGE AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

BACKGROUND: In May 2012, Cabinet approved The Virgin Islands Climate Change Adaptation Policy. Recent studies have indicated that within 15 years the costs of impacts from climate change are likely to be in the range of 4.5% of GDP (approximately US$50 million per year based on 2010 GDP). Climate Change is expected to have a significant impact on our economy in the near and long term. With limited opportunity to access international climate change financing, The Virgin Islands has, with assistance from the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre, over the past two years embarked upon a process to develop a national climate change financing framework to implement urgent priority climate change and disaster management programmes contained in The Virgin Islands Climate Change Adaptation Policy. This national climate change financing framework, which is to be established under legislation and meets the highest international standards of fiduciary management, is already being promoted as model for other vulnerable island developing States. This Climate Change Awareness Campaign serves to raise public consciousness to promote understanding of essential linkages between the preservation of the environment and development of our Territory. It was formed specifically to sensitize members of the public to the growing environmental, developmental, economical, and health–related concerns surrounding the effects of Climate Change that the British Virgin Islands will experience.
