Team UNITY announces the reduction of low income house mortgages and payments on Student Loans at massive first meeting of Listening Tour

Press Release

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, May 2nd   2014 (TUCOM):-A packed and overflowing Newtown Community Centre reflected the deep interest of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis in Team UNITY’s message of hope and deliverance. They came out from all walks of life and they came in huge numbers. It was a delight to all. The huge and highly interactive crowd got the first of a series of Community Forums and Townhall Meetings which has been labeled the “Team UNITY Listening Tour”  . The forum got going enthusiastically from around 8:15 p.m. and ran until nigh midnight.

The evening was ably chaired by young Jolanda Jones and Opening presentations were made by Ian Patches Liburd, Team Unity’s candidate for constituency #1, Lindsay Grant, Team Unity’s candidate for constituency #4 and Team Unity’s Leader, and parliamentary representative for constituency#7, Dr the Hon Timothy Harris. Hon. Eugene Hamilton, Hon. Sam Condor, Hon. Vincent Byron Jr.  and the Hon. Shawn K. Richards also joined the presenters of the evening and addressed the development of constituency #1, good governance, relations with Nevis, and economic growth and development.

Team Unity’s Leader announced two (2) new initiatives to bring relief to homeowners through the reduction of  mortgages on low income homes and the reduction of payments on student loans.

In justifying the announcement Dr.Harris said that the last batch of houses built by the illegitimate Douglas regime was too small and too expensive for the poor people, for whom they were intended. “Imagine that you are working for minimum wage and your government promises you an affordable income house, would you expect to be paying $600 plus, $700 plus, $800 plus out of your small minimum wage? This is unacceptable especially when those homes are incomplete- no tiles, no cupboards, no paints and inadequate fixtures. Team Unity is committed to provide our people with homes that they could pay for and living spaces about which they and their children can be proud.”
Turning attention to the reduction in the repayment on student loans, Dr Harris said the country needed more skills and more knowledge, “Tertiary level participation provides the crucial platform for development. It is therefore imperative that our country not only invest in the studies and training of our young but it is also important for our talented and skilled sons and daughters to return home. We must incentivize their studies and we will bring them back home not to be marginalized but to be our managers and owners.”

Dr Harris said the Douglas led party was out of ideas and the malaise and mismanagement in the country was clear to all.  He offered a campaign that was based on a contest of ideas.

A lively question and answer session followed the presentations. Questions were posed on thefiasco at the Basseterre High School, the health hazard now emerging at Beach Allen Primary School, the unfair treatment of workers, therole of the Labor Department, integrity in public life, the quality of healthcare, economic growth and development. Candid answers were given to the questions. The town hall ended on a very high note. There were lots of energy, enthusiasm and interaction throughout the long night.
