Zakers murder case making headway

By: Court Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AFTER almost two months of testimonies, the murder trial of Gregory Anthony Zakers it is making headway as the prosecution team begins wrapping up its case.

SKNVibes understands that last Friday (May 2) the jury had travelled to the alleged scene of the crime in St. Paul’s, where one of the key witnesses had stated that she heard screams and saw someone in a yard beating something on the night of April 10, 2008.

Zakers' lifeless body was discovered on a cliff in Black Rocks on April 12, 2008. The accused men - Moses Gardener, Shenroy Francis, Nelson Challenger, Jomi Rawlins, and Glenroy Smithen - have been awaiting trial for six years.

The trial, since it began on March 11, has seen a long list of witnesses testifying on the prosecution's behalf and also a slate of voir dires which have caused it to go far beyond its expected time.

Following the close of the prosecution's case, the defence team, which consists of five attorneys, would have the opportunity to call witnesses to give evidence on their clients' behalf or have the accused men take the stand in an effort to prove their innocence.

With the start of the May Criminal Assizes fast approaching, there have been concerns of it having to be delayed to accommodate the continuation of this trial.
