Press Release

2nd May 2014, Basseterre – Five of the nation’s high schools will be participating in the 2014 Annual Tourism Youth Congress, to be held at the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank Sir Cecil Jacobs Auditorium on Friday, 9th May.

Since 2006, the Annual Tourism Youth Congress sees high schools competing in a structured round table discussion, all to determine who will represent St. Kitts at the regional Tourism Youth Congress where they will contend for the title of ‘Junior Minister of Tourism”. The Regional Tourism Youth Congress will be held in the United States Virgin Islands in September under the theme, “Caribbean Tourism – Through the Eyes of Tomorrow”.

Miss Miranda Francis, a member of the planning committee, stated that the Tourism Youth Congress affords the youths of St. Kitts the opportunity to represent their country as Junior Minister.  It is aimed at giving the youths a voice to discuss similar Tourism issues as the Heads of Government from a youth perspective.  They are also required to discuss issues of local importance, and through this avenue of creating tourism awareness amongst the youth, can be encouraged to be part of the sustainability efforts of this country.”

The five participants will be judged on a three-minute presentation on any of two prepared topics plus a mystery question. This year’s topics focus on Accessible Tourism and Experiential Tourism. Judging criteria includes knowledge of the subject area, level of preparedness and presentation skills. Numerous prizes have been contributed by a variety of local sponsors including Kittitian Hill, Christophe Harbour, Silver Reef St. Kitts, National Bank, the St. Kitts Marriott Resort, Social Security, Ballahoo Restaurant and Serendipity Restaurant.

Ms. Cheyenne Quinlan, a former Youth Congress participant, will be moderating the competition.

The Tourism Youth Congress is being coordinated by the Ministry of Tourism in collaboration with the St. Kitts Tourism Authority.
