Beach Allen Primary Meet the Parents Series –Mothers’ Only PTA Meeting

By: BAPS, Press Release

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, May 15th, 2014  --  A New Decade a New Dimension has been the theme for the 2013-2014 Calendar of Events at the Beach Allen Primary School- one of the larger primary schools in the Federation On Thursday 8th May 2014 at school’s compound a large crowd of mothers gathered for the first Mothers’ ONLY PTA Meeting.

Those who attended demonstrated the belief that the greater the support parents give to their children the better these children will function in society.

Mrs Michelle Powell, Guidance Counsellor at the Advanced Vocation Educational Centre (AVEC) was the guest speaker and shared some tips on mothering.  She spoke from the heart and was able to connect to the mothers on some pertinent issues that affect the livelihood of our children.

Three key issues raised by Mrs Powell were 1.  Mothers’ behaviour towards their children when the love affair between parents takes a nose dive; 2. dressing up the children and 3. teach them how to relate to  the opposite sex when they grow older.

In her discourse she admonished the Mothers to love their children even when “daddy” is no longer there.  She abhorred them to spend quality time with them by reading books, having conversations and family walks.  She further stated that even if the work hours hindered such regularly, on the off days dedicate much of that time to them.

Secondly, Mrs Powell hinted that people tend to feel good if they look good, therefore the mothers should not only be the ones that dress up but their children must also get that special attention. She added that students who are not well groomed suffer the fate of their classmates teasing and this hinders their ability to produce good grades.

Mrs Powell third point addressed the issue of expectations of the other sex.  She encouraged the mothers to teach their daughters what to accept or reject when in a relationship.  The boys must also be taught how to treat their spouses.  She went on to state that even if the fathers were absent, Mothers need to teach their sons what is expected of them to have wholesome families.

The school now looks ahead to the second gathering of Fathers’ only, slated for Thursday 12th June at 4:30 p.m.  Also on the card is the Week of Activities to mark the 22nd year of the Beach Allen Primary.  This week runs from Saturday 24th – Saturday 31st May 2014 under the theme “Forging new paths...Bridging Community and School through Learning”.
