Thursday, May 15, 2014 - The Government of the Virgin Islands, in collaboration with the BVI Tourist Board, is enhancing the visitor experience on Jost Van Dyke (JVD) with the addition of a Welcome and Information Centre, as well as a Taxi Stand.

The two facilities are part of the Government’s commitment to developing the necessary tourism and business structures on Jost Van Dyke.

Speaking at the opening ceremonies for the two structures on Tuesday May 13, Premier and Minister for Tourism, Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith OBE stated, “My Government is committed to growing the tourism sector of the entire British Virgin Islands. As Minister for Tourism I must say that Jost Van Dyke is truly a diamond in the Territory.”

Noting that the sister island’s role in the BVI tourism industry cannot be understated Premier Smith said, “In 2013, over 56,000 tourists visited Jost Van Dyke and at the end of March 2014, within only three months, visitor arrivals are reported to be over 18,000.”

As he highlighted the importance of private and public sector partnerships within the tourism industry, the tourism Minister shared that the welcome and information centre, as well as the taxi stand came out of an industry partners meeting between the community and the BVI Tourist Board in March 2013.

In handing the keys over for the JVD Taxi Association and declaring the building open, Premier Smith commended the association members for their diligent efforts as a progressive body operating within the British Virgin Islands.

Other speakers at the ceremony included Sister Island Officer Mr. Arvan Hodge; Contractors Mr. John Chinnery and Mr Antonio Martin; Representative for the Second; District, Honourable J. Alvin Christopher; and President of the JVD Taxi Association Mr. Gregory Callwood. Both buildings were dedicated by Pastor Frandy Martin Sr. of the Church of God of Prophecy Church.

The JVD Welcome and Information Centre is anticipated to enhance the sister island’s reputation as a travel destination within the Territory and serve as resource for tourists and locals. The JVD Taxi Stand will ensure that visitors can be easily transported, through coordinated efforts, from the ferry dock to their accommodations, excursions or dining places.
