    -  Bermuda’s finest to join the ranks of footballing talent who will attend the Digicel Academy

Thursday 15th May 2014 – Kingston, Jamaica  --  Bermuda continued on the path of grassroots football development as the Chelsea FC Foundation coaches selected the three boys who will attend the Digicel Academy in Barbados later this year at the Digicel Kick Start Clinics.

Senior International Football Development Officer for the Chelsea FC Foundation and Digicel Kick Start Clinics Head Coach, David Monk, emphasised the fact that, despite the comparatively small group of boys who play at the level required to be a part of the Clinics, the quality of the players was evident nonetheless, saying; “Last year was our first time conducting the Digicel Kick Start Clinics in Bermuda, so we did not know what to expect from the players who would be attending. However, the boys who made it to the Academy last year showed themselves to be capable players and, not to take away from last year’s crop of players, this year’s group of winners has definitely stepped up the talent quotient and I can also say that their technical ability is top notch.”

Monk went on to say that the boys’ technical prowess on the field could be attributed to the fact that the coaches in Bermuda are heavily influenced by European training and education,

He said; “During the coach education session, we were quite impressed by how qualified and knowledgeable the coaches were. In fact, a number of them even had UEFA level qualifications, so the discussion was a mutually beneficial one as we shared the techniques we use at Chelsea’s youth football programme and also learned about the techniques and strategies the local coaches used to overcome the challenges they face in their local teams.”

At the end of the Clinics, three boys were selected to attend the Academy in Barbados who Monk feels will not only do their best at the Academy, but will also be good ambassadors for their country – something which he believes is just as important as being the most talented player on the pitch. The boys selected to attend are 14 year-old Ahria Simons, 15 year-old Kamali Davis and 14 year-old Jason Symonds.

The Digicel Kick Start Clinics – now in their eighth year – will again see thousands of aspiring young footballers from across 14 countries in the Caribbean and Central America try out for their chance to travel to the Digicel Academy in Barbados and train under top coaches from Barclays Premier League side, Chelsea FC.

During the week-long Digicel Academy, the top 42 boys from across the region get the chance of a lifetime to receive intensive training under coaches from Barclays Premier League side, Chelsea Football Club.
