    -   One of the region’s leading supporters of education on board for major education conference

Friday 16th May 2014, Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago  --  Digicel Business was today announced as platinum sponsor of the Virtual Educa Conference which takes place in Port-of-Spain on Monday 19th and Tuesday 20th May.

The announcement means that the conference – which is designed to bring together technology players, international education experts, school officials and students for expert workshops and training seminars – has the backing of one of the region’s leading supporters of education.

In Haiti alone, Digicel – through its Foundation – is committed to building 150 schools by September 2014. With 115 schools completed, and the remaining 35 on track for the new school year, Digicel is giving 50,000 children the opportunity to receive basic education and the pathway to a brighter future.

In Antigua, Digicel agreed a partnership with the Government to launch the multi-million dollar GATE (Government Assisted Technology Endeavour), project – the largest Information Communications Technology (ICT) project ever undertaken in the twin island state. The project sees young people in Antigua and Barbuda receiving direct access to LTE, the most advanced communications technology available today, and using state-of-the-art tablet computers as part of their day-to-day routine in school. The GATE project places the students of Antigua and Barbuda at the forefront of education – making them one of the most technologically advanced student body in the region – and ensuring that they have the knowledge and skills required to allow them to maximise their potential.

And in Jamaica, the Digicel Foundation recently signed a new agreement to team up with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Ministry of Education for the 2014 Enrichment Programme. This year alone, 31 schools will be receiving Enrichment Centres and mobile carts to help students in grades one to three better prepare for the Grade Four Literacy Test – and over a three-year period, the Enrichment Programme will be active within an additional 95 schools, bringing the total number of schools impacted by the initiative to nearly 200 schools island-wide.

Digicel Group Business Development Director and speaker at the Virtual Educa conference, Lisa Lewis, said; “At Digicel Business, we believe that technology-enabled education is instrumental in adequately preparing our young people for working in the information age. And our approach is proving to be a success – with students exposed to the Enrichment Centres in Jamaica seeing an average movement of two grade levels in literacy in just one year.”

“With that, we are delighted to be on board as platinum sponsor of Virtual Educa conference where like-minded organisations can work together to provide a better future for the region’s young students,” concluded Lewis.
