Basseterre, St. Kitts May 26, 2014, (PAMCOM) -- In what many are describing as one of the most inspirational and poignant speeches in recent St.Kitts-Nevis Politics former Leader of the People’s Action Movement Lindsay Grant declared to the largest PAM Convention in over 20 years that the federations is at a serious crossroads and faced with the FIERCE URGENCY OF NOW The famous quote by Martin Luther King had renewed meaning in the current St.Kitts-Nevis context said Grant.
“One of the greatest orators of our times Dr. Martin Luther King Jr in his historic speech on the march on Washington said: “ We are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history there “is” such a thing as being too late. There is no time for apathy or complacency. This is a time for vigorous and positive action,” said Grant
The fiery Team UNITY People’s Action Movement Candidate for Constituency #4 fervently continued “Today in St.Kitts and Nevis these words have renewed meaning.When Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke at the March on Washington, he described a “fierce urgency of now.” He reminded a divided nation that we need one another, and that we are stronger when we march forward, together. “We cannot walk alone,” he said. “And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall march ahead. We cannot turn back.”
Grant lamented the sad situation at the Basseterre High School and again declared that for the students at the BHS there is a “FIERCE URGENCY OF NOW”
He said “For all the students, teachers and parents of those students at the Basseterre High School who have suffered at the hands of an uncaring Minister of Education and Minister of Health, there is the urgency of now. You have to ensure that you have a government that keeps all students and government workers in safe and clean and healthy surroundings.”
“For every man or woman who are unable to pay the mounting electricity bills, there is an urgency of now. Because we have provided you over the past months with our plans to reduce the cost of electricity.To make it affordable to the householders to put money back in the peoples pockets.
For every man or woman who are without running water we have said to you that it is unacceptable in 2014 to have households without the basic necessity of running water and we will ensure that within our first five year stint no household is left behind and all should have the basic necessity of running water.
For all those living below the poverty line and there are 1 in 3 of us who fit into this category, not even able to afford the basic necessity of food, shelter and clothing, there is the urgency of now. Because we have provided you with more than one reason whereby we will improve your current standing and ensure that not only do we put more money in your pocket but that we move you up out of poverty.
For those of you living from paycheck to paycheck, there is the urgency of now. For those of you who cannot afford the affordable homes we have said to you that we have a program designed already for you, which will see a significant reduction in mortgage rates to low income earners.
For those of you who have gone abroad for tertiary education, who have returned only to find that you have degrees, but you too are living from pay check to pay check because when you have finished paying Development Bank or other financial institutions on your student loan you cannot afford to live decently. We have already outlined a program for you, which will significantly reduce your student loan costs.
To those who have been suffering the injustices of an unjust system, we say to you that there is the urgency of now,” the Harvard trained Attorney Passionately declared.
Grant told the energetic and responsive audience that he as part of PAM in a historic Team UNITY government have already committed to and outlined numerous plans to ensure that never again will the country be governed again in the manner it is being managed presently.
The passionate Grant said “To those who have been suffering the injustices of an unjust system, we say to you that there is the urgency of now. Never again will you have a Motion Of No Confidence outstanding for 16 months and a Prime Minister, illegitimate as he is, is allowed to govern with impunity.”
Grant concluded with a plea for the end of the era of divisive politics and the ushering of a new era of UNITY.
“The time for division of our people and our Federation has long passed. The time for unity is now. So talk to your families friend and neighbors. Be a champion and step up and step forward. Our cause is your cause.
Thousands of families and friends and neighbors cannot afford for us to turn back now. They are counting on us to march ahead; they are counting on us to forge ahead. They are counting on us to bring them an historic victory for the people. And we will,” Grant concluded.
