Friday, May 30 – The British Virgin Islands Ports Authority (BVIPA) is continuing to grow and develop its human resources capital, after two senior officers recently completed Port Management training and are now certified Port Executives. The overseas training took place earlier this month and was facilitated by the MacDonnell Group. The training focused on the marine transportation system, port and terminal management and administration, along with the changing regulations affecting all ports and marine facilities.

The recently certified port executives, Deputy Managing Director Mr. Al Henley and Operations Manager Mr. Akeem Pickering, both attended the week-long training in Houston, Texas and Baltimore, Maryland, respectively. They both can affix the designation “CPE” after their names.

Commenting on the training, Mr. Henley said, “I found the training to be very informative but more so relevant and practical. We went through the full gamut of port governance and management.”  The deputy director also said that the combined areas of study highlighted various opportunities that could be adopted and implemented to help improve many areas of our BVI ports services and infrastructure.  Those areas included Intermodal Transportation Systems; Regulatory Requirements and Legal Issues; Safety and Security; Tariffs, Terminal Regulations and Operating Plans; Port and Terminal Operations; and Risk Management and Marine Infrastructure.

Regarding the benefits of the training, Mr. Pickering said, “The training broadened my understanding of the inner workings of ports, especially those in the United States of America (USA). This was of major importance to me with respect to operations, and also considering the Authority deals with lots of inbound cargo from the USA.”In congratulating the new port executives, Managing Director of the BVIPA Mr. Claude O. Skelton Cline said, “This is a stellar achievement on both a personal and professional level. Not only have both officers demonstrated that they are self motivated by being successful at the training, but they have also sharpened their management and leadership skills.

And, for that, I congratulate them.”The recent training is in line with the Authority’s human resources mission, that is, to have a cadre of trained and competent staff, who has the qualifications, drive and passion to carry out their duties effectively and efficiently. The BVI Ports Authority is charged with facilitating the safe, efficient and effective operation of the related cargoes and passengers transiting the BVI’s seaports.
