St. Paul’s Coach: “We wanted it more than them”

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - ON Sunday evening (Jun. 1) after S.L. Hosford’s St. Paul’s FC captured the St. Kitts-Nevis Football Association (SKNFA) Premier Division Title for the third time, the team’s head coach identified “tenacity  and guts” as the deciding  factor that led to their success.

After trouncing RAM’S Village Superstars in two games of the Best of Three Finals, head coach Austin ‘Dico’ Huggins told this publication that his team was the hungrier of the two in the Finals.

“We had more tenacity and guts and the guys brought home the victory. We wanted it more than them.”

He then praised his side for their performance and claimed his players handled the game well.

“It was a very hard fought performance. We started off a little flat but I expected that a lot of pressure was on the guys to win the title. Nevertheless, we managed to handle the game well and got through.”

Huggins also recounted the final minutes of game two when Village Superstars were trying to mount a comeback.

“To tell you the truth, I was a little nervous but I still had confidence in my team. I thought we gave them a soft goal, but we stuck to it and came out big.”

Huggins was also questioned about the team’s future, but stated that he could not comment at the moment.

“I can’t really talk about next season right now, it is celebration time.”

St. Paul’s placed second heading into the Final Four Playoffs and finished second in the Playoffs as well.

They played to a tame nil-all draw against HE Garden Hotspurs in their first game before defeating St. Peter’s 2-nil in the second.

With Garden Hotspurs’ failure to beat St. Peter’s, it meant that St. Paul’s had to join Village in the Finals, which defeated them 2-nil in the final game of the Playoffs and finished on four points.

Two goals by Josh leader in the first game of the Finals set the pace for the S.L. Horsford’s St. Paul’s FC as they drew first blood.

In the second game, first half goals from Terrance Ward and Attis Hughes led the way for the team winning their third title.
