June 5th, 2014 -- George Washington "Washy" Archibald did not sit quietly by as family members, friends and well wishers showered him with Birthday wishes on Saturday May 30, 2014. No he did not!
On a cool, New York City afternoon, the renowned educator celebrated his birthday "Washy" style! He was in lively spirits. He rose from his chair, he moved back and forth as the music played, and he clearly enlivened all who came to see him and celebrate with him.
The federation's acclaimed Elder welcomed his 80th birthday on Wednesday May 28th, surrounded by close family and continued to celebrate the gift of life days later.
Washy seemed extremely jovial, upbeat and pleased to be surrounded by family and familiar faces and he was clearly moved by the gesture spearheaded by his children, grandchildren and their loved ones.
Those in attendance marveled at how refreshed Washy appeared to be and the relaxed atmosphere seemed to be a welcome opportunity for the renowned educator to simply "take it easy."
There was a wide variety of delicacies in which Saturday's guests indulged including barbecue chicken, goat water and rice and peas. However, when Elder Washy was served a few cuts of black pudding, one of his most loved delicacies, the celebration was turned up just a notch: and indulge he did! His smile was an indication of his approval and appreciation for the tastiest black pudding around!
After the birthday song was rendered, Stevie Wonder style, and once the noise of the milestone celebration came to a lull, Washy returned to his home for some much needed rest. His family pulled out the stops to honor him on his birthday and he seemed most pleased with their efforts.
It was extremely heartening to see Mr. Archibald surrounded by those who have unreservedly supported him during his almost year long ordeal. Washy's journey to full recovery continues.
The family of George Washington Archibald extends sincere best wishes to all who called, offered words of encouragement, prayed, visited, emailed or expressed their love in any small way. The birthday celebration was a memorable one thanks in part to all who participated and for that we are deeply moved and appreciative.
