BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - LOCAL Guinness Street Football Champs Conaree FC, are eyeing an improvement to last year’s performance at this year’s Annual Guinness Street Football Challenge Final in Trinidad and Tobago.
The team earned the right to represent the Federation for the second consecutive year after outclassing their opponents in May to retain the local title.
Speaking with this publication, head coach of Conaree FC Lester Morris claimed that preparations for this weekend’s tournament in Trinidad are progressing well.
“To be honest, preparation has been well ever since we won the second edition here in St. Kitts. We have been on the court quite frequently. Just last night (Jun. 3) we had practiced and the night before was even more intense. The guys are well prepared and good to go.”
He then outlined his team’s objectives for the tournament.
“Our first objective is to ensure we move up the rankings and to better where we finished last year. We are expecting to do much better and I always say you never go into anything to lose. So, we are also trying to go out there and win this tournament.”
Morris explained how he believes last year’s appearance would help them this time around.
“It was a great accomplishment last year; the guys would have learnt a lot. This year’s team has three or four new members but we still have guys from the tournament last year, so there is experience they can share with the other guys. The experience was great and we just want to do well.”
The team left this morning (Jun. 5) for Trinidad with a contingent of seven players and one coach.
Conaree FC proved they are the kings of street football in St. Kitts and Nevis when they hammered an ill-tempered Sandy Point team 7-1 to retain their Guinness Street Football Challenge Title.
Trinidad and Tobago captured the street challenge last year in St. Vincent following a 2-1 penalty shoot-out with Dominica.
Trinidad and Tobago will host nine Caribbean neighbours at the Final of the Fourth Annual Guinness Street Football Challenge on June 6-7, two months after the preliminary round kicked off in Tobago.
The other participating countries are Guyana, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Antigua, Grenada, Dominica as well as debutants Barbados and Jamaica.
