    -  Players who participate in Kick Start Clinics set for increased development

Thursday 5th June 2014, Kingston, Jamaica  --  Recently, www.digicelfootball.com spoke with Senior International Football Development Officer for the Chelsea FC Foundation and Digicel Kick Start Clinics Head Coach, David Monk, to find out how the programme has been received by the various football federations across the region and how they plan to support the development of these talented young footballers who take part in the programme.

Monk heaped praises on the federations, saying; “The federations allow us to use their best training facilities for the Clinics which is a great result as it demonstrates their understanding of the benefits of the programme because it mirrors the structure that they have in place their respective countries.

As we travel throughout the Caribbean and Central America, the Digicel Kick Start programme is definitely reaping success – a fact proven by the number of the Kick Start players who go on to play for their national teams or are awarded scholarships to some of the top universities in the region. The federations have been very supportive of the development of their players and the Kick Start programme in this regard.”

Monk believes that the region’s football federations can build on that support by taking the boys who shine at the Clinics and the Academy and preparing them for future success. He said; “What we need is football federations that will ensure that the talent that is coming out of the Digicel Kick Start programme is harnessed and developed properly. So to have the support of the football federations is important in keeping the boys playing at their best.

A number of the players who attended the Academy have gone on to be a part of the national team and, even those who were not selected, are now on the radar of the national coaches. The long term goal of the Kick Start programme is to continue the relationship with the boys and so until then, the work of the region’s football federations is critical.”

The Digicel Kick Start Clinics – now in their eighth year – see thousands of aspiring young footballers from across 15 countries in the Caribbean and Central America try out for their chance to travel to the Digicel Academy in Barbados and train under top coaches from Barclays Premier League side, Chelsea FC.

During the week-long Digicel Academy, the top 42 boys from across the region get the chance of a lifetime to receive intensive training under coaches from Barclays Premier League side, Chelsea Football Club.
