BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - A stoppage-time winner from Haris Seferovic on Sunday (Jun. 15) lifted Switzerland 2-1 over Ecuador as they came from behind to win the most exciting game of the 2014 World Cup thus far.
Skysports reported that Seferovic got on the end of a late counter-attack to convert Ricardo Rodriguez's low cross at the near post with just 23 seconds of added time remaining with the score at 1-1.
It also stated that the chance came from Ecuador's final attack of the game when Michael Arroyo delayed his shot and lost possession to Valon Behrami, who launched a swift break.
And in the match-up between France and Honduras, two goals from Karim Benzema steered the Frenchmen to a 3-nill win in a game, where goal-line technology made a successful debut when it was deemed that Honduras goalkeeper Noel Valladares had pushed the ball over the line in the 48th minute.
Benzema fired the shot off the post and, after and it seemed to have been saved by Valladares, the goal-line technology system ruled that the ball had just crossed over the line.
France opened the scoring through a Benzema penalty kick in the first half, which led to the dismissal of Honduras’ Wilson Palacios after receiving his second yellow card.
Benzema got his second and France’s third after a deflected shot fell kindly to him, which he hammered past goalkeeper Valladares.
In the final game yesterday, Lionel Messi finally came to the World Cup party for Argentina as he scored a wonderful goal to get his team off to a winning start against debutants Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Skysports reported that Argentina took the lead after just three minutes into the game, thanks to an own-goal from Sead Kolasinac, but they struggled to create any further major opportunities in the first half.
Messi doubled Argentina’s lead in the 65th minute after sliding past a couple of defenders before finishing, following a deflection off the post.
Bosnia-Herzegovina reduced their arrears with six minutes remaining to set up a tense finale, but the Argentineans did not allow a second goal.
