Basseterre, St. Kitts (September 01, 2005): Students taking advantage of the meals provided by the school feeding programme can once again be assured of nutritious healthy meals throughout the school year.
This is due to a comprehensive School Feeding Programme workshop, specially designed to provide training for supervisors, teachers in charge of the programme in schools, foodservice workers at the central canteen and at schools.
The objectives of the training session which runs from August 29 to September 02, include: establishing and implementing standards for the school feeding programme and using standards to acquire relevant resources and guide the activities of the foodservice operations. The workshop is also intended to maintain appropriate sanitation standards and monitor the programme and ensure high quality service.
The Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute (CFNI) came together to coordinate and conduct the workshop.
The training session commenced with a brief opening ceremony at which facilitator Mrs. Laura Richards, CFNI Medical Dietitian and Chief Education Officer Mr. Patrick Welcome gave brief remarks. The sessions are being held at the Foundation for National Development and will also be facilitated by two local Environmental Health Officers.
Some of the topics being considered over the five days include nutrition and the school-aged child, controlling food supplies principles of ordering, use of the menu and recipes, sanitation schedule and procedures as well as quality standards and monitoring.
