Basseterre, St. Kitts (September 01, 2005):
Barbados successfully defended its Under 13 Cricket Invitational championship title defeating host country St. Kitts by 75 runs on Wednesday.
This marks the third time a team from the Land of the Flying Fish has emerged victorious in the nine-year tournament history.

The Department of Sport organized competition began August 24 featuring teams from six countries. Joining the previously mentioned islands were Dominica, Nevis, Anguilla and first timers Montserrat.

Anthony Alleyne of Barbados was adjudged the tournaments most valuable player (MVP) having scored a total of 223 runs along with an 11-wicket haul over the course of the eight-day contest.

    S. Howell a parent of a Barbados cricketer traveled to St. Kitts with the team. She gave her impressions of the tournament. I like the place, Ive been here twice and the country is very good. The cricketing is very friendly & and the competition is very good. I love it, she said. The cricket development for my child isnt bad. He is (playing) good competitive cricket and he is learning more & about different types of cricket (game play).

Alkins Rogers, the Director of Sports of Anguilla and member of the Organization of Caribbean Administrators of Sport and Physical Education (OCASPE) was also in St. Kitts for the event. He mentioned that this programme is an excellent developmental tool.

We are hoping that the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) can see it fit to support the initiatives by the St. Kitts government and put some funding in this programme because it is from here that our cricketers will develop, Rogers stressed.

Coach Vernon Springer of the Ministry of Tourism, Sports and Culture coordinated the 9th Annual Under 13 Cricket Invitational and described it as a success. He explained that the competition used a round robin play format for the first time to give the participants more opportunities to play cricket.

Springer thanked the sponsors for their support and promised an extra special tournament for the 10-year anniversary, next year.
