June 26th, 2014  --  The Summer break from school will not be a complete vacation for the incoming executive committee members of the St. Kitts and Nevis Students Association - Jamaica Chapter (SKNSAJA) who intend to do some work while at home in the Federation.  According to the new President, Roma Richardson, they intend to have fundraising activities and to meet with students who should be attending the University of the West Indies’ (UWI) Mona Campus and the University of Technology (UTech) in Jamaica starting this year.

“Fundraising in St. Kitts and Nevis is better because we have the advantage of being surrounded by people who know us and who would be more willing to support.  That aside, there are enough fund raisers on the (UWI) campus already,” Ms. Richardson said. She added that the meeting with incoming students would be to give them an idea of what to expect when they get to Jamaica. “Both current students and alumni would be able to share with incoming students their experiences and any valuable tips related to living, eating, studying and getting around. I'm really interested in establishing a Kittitian/Nevisian community where students can find support.”

The SKNSAJA has managed to stay active on the Mona Campus over the past several years and hold regular monthly meetings. Standard yearly events include the annual Independence week activities - the flag raising ceremony which includes cultural performances at the Aston Preston Hall, as well as the Independence Service and Brunch.  Another is the week-long UWI Mona Homecoming Celebrations.

The group’s participation includes selling St. Kitts and Nevis cuisine at the Caribbean Day exhibition and participating in the Homecoming Parade. Where the parade is concerned, their colourful and impressive section which highlights cultural aspects from their homeland - such as the clown, the national colours, etc. - has won the best small group on parade prize for the past two years. Although among the smallest of all the country associations, the SKNSAJA is one of the most consistently active on the Mona Campus.

The incoming executive committee that will serve for the 2014-2015 academic year comprises:

President - Xavienne-Roma Richardson (Literatures in English major)

Vice President - Jamela Davis (International Relations major)

Secretary - Ariela Wilkinson (Biology with Education major)

    Treasurer - Karen Liburd (MBBS)

Public Relations Officer - Tishanna Hazel (MBBS)

Cultural and Entertainment Affairs Chair - Dasima Martin (MBBS)
