CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – FOLLOWING the recent spate of gun-related killings, SKNVibes took to the streets of Nevis and asked residents what they think could be done to curb the crime situation in the Federation.

I think the crime rate is ridiculous. I think the children of single parents need love and help. They should do away with the violence, seek God, and I’m appealing to parents to read the bible to their kids and pray often. And to the government, lend a helping hand to the youth because jail is not a paradise. And to the youths, keep out the gangs. I’m a mother of eight kids so I know how hard it is to lose a child by violence or to have one in prison. To the community, let us show love to each other. Talk to them and find out what is going on in their lives.

I think it is getting like a hobby, too popular now for a small federation like us. I think that we can solve the problem but it has to start with us parents. We as parents need to bring back the old days where we can allow other parents to correct our kids when they are wrong. The gang thing is getting out of hand. The police need to arrest the culprits.

Crime in the Federation has definitely created much stir among the local citizenry, the government and, no doubt, among the citizens and governments of the region. It would be foolish if one was to suggest that it is a problem of one half of the twin-island Federation. I would suggest that it is imperative for us as a twin-island Federation to view it as a national problem which would require national strategic analysis, national resources and enforcement nationally from all strategic points within the Federation. It is not in my opinion a dilemma which would require regional support, as I am confident that all three organs of the state are adequately equipped to deal with a small sect of vagabonds and hooligans who are determined to seek their own means of resolve with little or no regard for right thinking and honorable citizens.
