Basseterre, St. Kitts – DESPITE harsh criticisms from some members of society suggesting that he has failed in his capacity as commander of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF), Commissioner Celvin ‘CG’ Walwyn is touting that during his three-year stint, crime has been reduced by close to 40 percent.
In some quarters, it is suggested that the Commissioner has seen measured success but still has a great deal of work to do in bringing the Federation to place of minimal crime. Others suggest however, that the Commissioner’s success is far-reaching while on the other end of the spectrum, some are of the view that he failed miserably at his job.
Speaking with FreedomFM 106.5 however, the Commissioner informed that there has been an overall 38 percent reduction in crime during the time he has been in charge of the Police Force.
“With regard to the crime statistics, over the last 35 months that I’ve been here, we have seen a reduction in crime of approximately 38 percent…and we have seen a reduction in major crime within the Federation. …On a month-to-month analysis, we have seen all of the brackets go down regardless of the challenges that we have encountered.
He informed however that an increase was realised in the robberies in Nevis noting that “that has been and is being addressed. So we expect to see a reduction in this month…
The COP said he instituted a number of initiatives and measures which effected a decrease in the crime rate.
“But overall crime in the Federation has been down. We are one of the only countries in the Caribbean where crime has consistently gone down. We have seen in other major tourist destinations, they are having issues with the escalation of crime while in St. Kitts, it’s a de-escalation. Our crime has dropped, many people are surprised but we knew what to do based on the experience…”
Having taken up the Commissioner’s position on September 1, 2011, Walwyn’s contract was up for renewal earlier this week and according to him, the government has asked him to continue as commander of the RSCNPF.
